I was a little blown-away when I caught a snippet in the Parents magazine that arrived in my mailbox last Friday that said that the job of "stay-at-home-mom" would garner a salary of $131, 471/year in the paycheque-earning world. I guess that figure factors in double or triple-time for being on call twenty-hours hours a day :)
Am I worth that? I have to say that if I were paying someone $131,471 I probably would expect my house to be a little cleaner, the laundry to be done on time, and healthier meals prepared. The occasional episode of Oprah would not be gracing our television. But I do think that recognizing the work that moms who take a break from the workforce do to provide a safe and caring home for their babies is worth something. There's an item on financial statements valuing "goodwill". Maybe that's how the work of a stay-at-home parent should be recognized.
