I am beginning to think that turning Madeline's carseat forward-facing was a bad idea. She's taken to fussing and whining and reaching while she's in it, even for quick trips to the grocery store! From her position in the centre of the backseat, she has a perfect view of the climate control buttons on the dashboard, and I think she's really frustrated that she's strapped into the back instead of being able to leap into the front to play with them!
Do you have a loblaws superstore around you? I got Nikyla a toybox from there specifically for the car. I found it very handy, I filled it with toys that make noise and lights when you push, twist or pull them.

That reminds me, I bought a toy steering wheel for Benjamin. It has a horn, flashers and even a plastic cell phone attached. Got it at Wal-Mart for $10.
Or you could get her Madeline a really long stick so that she can press the climate control buttons from the back seat. : )

Hee hee - those are both helpful idea, but I honestly think she'd like the big stick best of all :)
