Why is it that babies have a "layette" instead of a "wardrobe"? Previous to having to worry about acquiring little t-shirts and little socks, I had actually thought that "layette" was a term given to those lacey and (usually) white baby apparel gift sets that some department stores and boutiques carry (often in pretty box). I realized that I was sorely wrong the day that Chris and I were doing some hand-on research on strollers at a baby shop and the sales person asked us if we had received their layette hand-out … and then thrust a photocopy in our hands that listed out sizes and quantities of, well, regular baby clothes. Not pretty lacey things - cotton t-shirts, onesies (I'll get into that term later!), baby pajamas … all the stuff that will get spit up on and otherwise soiled … and pretty much is a regular baby wardrobe … Am I missing something here?
Phew. I'm glad I'm not the only person who doesn't know what a layette is.
