I'm sure it must be daunting. Fear of going BACK to work is a big reason I've never really left. Though the guilt associated with it is pretty terrible as well, so ... toss up?

I'm know there are tons of articles and books and bulletin boards on the subject so I won't offer any advice but I wish you good luck. I know you'll succeed. :)

I have absolutely no advice, but a ton of commiseration. Now that both of my kids are in school daily until 3 PM, I've felt a little guilty about not going back to work; but #1 - I'm not passionate about any of my options (except teaching Zumba, which is a bust here, but I'll be able to do next time we move) and #2 - like you said, WHAT OPTIONS? Unemployment here is sky high, and I still need to be free by 3 PM everyday. With my work gap & no real experience that goes with my (useless, but it made me happy :-P) German degree, I'm not qualified to do much, except for those basic jobs which are totally filled. I am BEYOND thankful we can make ends meet w/o me going back to work, but I am 100% familiar with that icky churning in the pit of my stomach whenever I think about how on earth I could w/o going back to school and starting allll over again = personal nightmare.

Well, you could have taken online courses all these years to keep yourself current. You could have put M in daycare in both Calgary and St. Johns and worked part time, full time or consulted. You could have been teaching english or at least vollunteering overseas for your resume. But you didn't... so now you need to find something new to do. Don't let fear of the unknown drag you down. You still have a brain, and skills. Work on your weak points and excell at your strong points. If you want to go back to school.. do it. Submit resume's anyway, you don't know what will happen.
