season for window-shopping

Even if I never intend on buying anything, a trip to the big mall here is never complete without a visit to Williams-Sonoma. The last time I was there this cute little snowman cake pan and the resulting cake were sitting in the window. Inside, the entire store smelled like freshly baked gingerbread. There probably *was* fresh gingerbread baking in the store! But the thing that struck me most about this snowman cake was how hard it would be to slice it neatly!

Stoves are dangerous weapons

I'm simmering a chicken carcass today to make into a lovely chicken soup with carrots, mushrooms, and hopefully barley. The pot had been on the stove for about forty-five minutes and I was kind of concerned that it hadn't started to boil yet. I didn't realize that I had the wrong burner on until I went to move the pot-lid that was covering the burner that I turned on instead and burned the thumb and forefinger on my left hand! Argh!!! This is the second time I've been burned because I turned on the wrong burner!

Does everyone have a convection oven but me?

I'm just wondering because I've had the meatloaf from Saveur Cooks Authentic American in the oven for over 2.5 hours now, and it's still not cooked all the way through!  Ugh! The recipe says to bake for 45 minutes on 350 degrees ... whatever!

That's what happens when I am presented with fresh flowers, fruit, chocolate, candied violets, and gold dust in a cake-decorating class. I try everything!

I have two huge take-aways from my class at the Cookbook Company. One: I need to bake more cakes so that I can practice icing them.  Only I don't really want all that cake around because I don't need to eat cake multiple times a day. Two: I really want a turntable for icing cakes now. I made the mistake of trying it out at the class and the difference is amazing for me!
