Vegemite the Mighty

One of the neat things that Chris and I got to do on our holiday in Australia was have all the Vegemite we wanted at breakfast.  The first time we tried it, Chris smothered it all over a piece of toast.  The next morning I noticed that his second cousin, who we were staying with, merely dabbed it here and there on her toast, amid butter. The taste improved with the lighter touch!  Chris took to the spread more than I did, but I do plan on buying a small jar of it to have here.  It would go wonderfully with scrambled eggs on toast, I think. And it is another good example of how sometimes the strangest-tasting stuff is actually good for the body - look at the health benefits here!  I'm obviously not achieving as much with the peanutbutter and jam I normally have in the morning ...

I'm on vacation ...

and will try my best to stay off the computer while I'm away :)

Lemony Snicket

I've been dreaming of lemon squares lately!  These were the first ones I've tried making, using the recipe from One Smart Cookie.  It was a treat to use my citrus zester, too :)

The top of my squares was different than what I expected - there was a layer of what I can only call *lemon curd crust*.  Not sure if that's how the recipe was supposed to turn out, or if I overcooked the squares.

I might try the lemon square recipe from i was just really hungry next time - they look wonderful!

Save me a place in line!

One of the most unfortunate things about moving to Calgary from Vancouver was that Calgary's Ikea store sucked.  It was really tiny, and the parking lot was shared with about a dozen other merchants.  Good luck finding a parking spot on a weekend.  But angels have smiled upon Cowtown, and our new Ikea is scheduled to open next Wednesday. I hope it's a nice as the new one in Edmonton. I will have to wait until we're back from a vacation to find out, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they're have the table I've been coveting to set my sewing machine and serger up upon.

Sadly, I have lost the opportunity to be the first customer in the new store - a single mom has been waiting in line for about five days now. She's camping out to win a $5000 shopping spree, and I think I heard she's going to pick out bedroom furniture for her children.
